Strongholds

Previously, we contemplated on thoughts and mindsets. Now we will turn our attention to the concept of Strongholds.

A simple definition for Stronghold is:

A fortified place.

In day to day terms, a stronghold is a place of strength, a place of defense, a place that, by definition, makes for exclusion. By implications, a lot of force (or alternatively, wisdom) needs to be exerted to overcome a stronghold.

What has this got to do with thoughts? Well sometimes, there are thoughts that if and when accommodated can later become strongholds, and keep that individual under their control and power, in some cases to a place of exclusion and destruction. Further more, they become resistant to simple attempts to break them down or shed them.

There are different ways thoughts become strongholds including lusts, reinforcements, demon spirit influence and so on and forth.

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Emphasis mine

2 Peter 1:4 (KJV)

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Romans 6:16 (KJV)

In our world today, a stronghold that we are all quite familiar with is that which we call Addictions. Addictions are strong and powerful, they make puppets out of men, they become pseudo-lords, taking their place as the hubs around which virtually every other decision is based on. Addictions are strongholds, and addicts are their captives.

That’s one of the reasons why addicts can’t simply wake up and walk away. It’s because they are dealing with a stronghold. The way out has to do with the submission of the mind to something else which is of a sufficient weight to overthrow the hold of the fortress, otherwise the labour might be earnest and honest, but ultimately it will fail.

Something that I have found is that thought strongholds can involve more than an individual at the same time. Sometimes, there are “simple” influences that can cover whole populations, and sometimes, they could be more sinister.

But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

Acts 8:9

This is an entire city, being captivated through the instrumentality of sorcery. I usually say that when you observe anything that seems to be pervasive in a territory or over a large number of people, look closely; the influence of a spirit/spirits is involved. The truth is, an entire group of people can be bewitched unto a stronghold.

What, then, is the way out?

[9] But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

[12] But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Acts 8:9, 12 (KJV)

Notice that contrast; “But when they believed…the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ…”. This is where all true liberation and freedom starts from. We can choose to shortcut or short circuit this. We also see the result in the subsequent verses, the power of God takes over and the hold is broken, completely and definitely.

Are you currently under the bonds of any stronghold, or do you know anyone that is? I present to you, under God, the way out: A decisive believe in name of Jesus Christ and submission under the presence, influence and power of the kingdom of God.
