Love and Needs.

In an attempt to describe the five basic human needs, a theory was formed. It was called the Theory of Human Motivation, and it was advanced by American psychologist Abraham Maslow. Contained in this theory is the commonly known Hierarchy of Needs, and Love is captured as a component of the third strata of the hierarchy.

Every individual has their unique physiological and psychological needs and desires, of which love is usually one of the strongest. In the average human’s perception, love tends to be measured in terms of what someone needs, or what they believe they need. As a result, they themselves express love in certain ways – for example, the use of love languages.

Similary, God expresses His love for us in His desire to meet our needs. The difference is, unlike humans who are imperfect and selfish, and therefore not the best judge of what they or their loved ones need, God knows exactly what we need. Furthermore, He means us well. His plans for us are always good, never bad.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)

However, the challenge always comes up when our own desires are in direct opposition to His will. God expresses love for His own freely. In response, and as believers, our Love for God expressed should be illustrated by our readiness to, through deliberate actions, pursue and conform to God’s will.

Chasing what is not God’s will for us is choosing what we do not need, and this can spell doom sooner or later in life, because our minds can’t appreciate the wisdom that undergirds the plans of God. We simply can’t choose the best for ourselves the way God can.

[8] For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
[9] For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV)

It is therefore in our best interest, as we go through life, to identify God’s desires for us, in order to partake of the blessings of alignment with and participation in His Will.
