Broken Code…

On the journey to becoming like Christ, every man has to stand strongly on the precepts and principles that have been written, and passed down through decades of generations. It has always amused me how that this written word though has existed for a long while, has remained the same, unchanging and ever potent.

On the other hand, the world we live in is dominated by humans of different kinds. Humans who were groomed to grow with varying mindsets and mentality, based on first hand experiences. As expected, all of these wrapped up together have eventually formed the traditions, myths, culture, and opinions that somewhat rule the world today.

Colossians 2:8

[8] See to it that no-one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

As a young lady birthed and raised in this part of the world, there are rules everyone screams about and there are the unspoken codes. Recently, I broke one of the codes.

On my way home from work, I boarded a bus and as the journey started I paid my fare which required that I should be given a particular amount of money back as change. Every other person paid also.

Philippians 2:4-5

[4] Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
[5] Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

In this city, it is well known that you should never keep quiet when you’re expecting to collect change from a driver or conductor. Keep reminding him about the amount you are to get back, just don’t be quiet. So, I kept reminding the driver about my change, same as a handful of people still, he remained quiet.

Halfway into the journey, I realized that everyone was to get the same amount of money and I knew I had to get mine before getting to the last stop, based on previous unpleasant experiences I had had. The driver soon started giving out change to everyone.

Hebrews 13:16

[16] Make sure you don’t take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good; share what you have with others. God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship–a different kind of “sacrifice”–that take place in kitchen and workplace and on the streets.

I was seated beside a man carrying a little child who was expecting his change too. I did my calculations and saw that I could get my change from the driver faster than him, well, I had to settle myself first before thinking of someone else right?

But the moment the driver passed the money to the back, I collected it and gave it to the man beside me. 😥 He was shocked to have seen this happen and he thanked me profusely. I thought about my action and found out that I was at peace. Against my speculations, the driver gave me my change as soon as we approached the last stop. I felt like I had been given a million bucks just by my action.

What standards are you living your life by? According to the word or the dictates of the world? What code would you rather break?
Going against what the world portrays as ‘Street sense‘, and embracing ‘Christ sense‘ adds a medal to your life race and places you closer to becoming like Christ. What’s it going to be?

Colossians 2:6-7

[6] So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him,
[7] rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
