Christmas. I think I have fond memories of this day, most years. As the years passed by, I think the fun part of it cooled off for me. I started to seriously consider the meaning behind Christmas.
And just for the sake of clarity, the meaning of Christmas has to my mind nothing to do with the date. But rather the statement of it and its implications. I hope we are familiar with the miracle of a virgin birth, so I’d leave that to rest.
I’d draw this discussion from a foremost prophetic insight:
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
One of the implications of the birth of Jesus is Salvific. Another is Governmental. Isaiah under the Spirit of Prophecy told us as a matter of importance that the government shall rest upon his shoulder. This child, this Son will as a matter of right and responsibility bear governance. Question is, Government of what or where? The answer affects the creation and creature.
You see, I had previously wondered what accounted for the reaction of Herod towards the announcement by the Magi that a king was born and his subsequent fury. Also at the statement by the Magi:
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Listen to this. They said, where is he that is born King (not born to be king, but born King) He was born a king. Matthew had initially made known to us, the salvatory dimension of Jesus.
We must realize, the governmental dimensions of the birth of Jesus. He came to bear government. And just like the Magi, this reality calls for our worship and surrender.
This Christmas, therefore it’s my prayer that we come into the governmental implications of his birth, for the government shall be upon his shoulder. The Devil through the agency of Herod understood what the Magi said, and he wiped out an entire generation in an attempt to sabotage that intention. So also in our lives, he attempts always to obscure this dimension from us because even if we end up being saved, the increase in our lives is predicated on government:
Thus Isaiah 9:7
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
This Christmas, I pray that our lives come under the government. Merry Christmas.
