This Little Light Of Mine

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…”

This childhood song used to be one of my favorites then, until a “woke” Sunday school teacher informed us of the wrongness of the lyrics. How that we don’t have “little” light, but great glorious light. Singing “this Great light of mine… ” as you can imagine was too cumbersome for my young lips, and that particular song died a natural, if premature, death. Of course, I’ve now formed my own thoughts on the song, but we’ll address that later. 🙂

Matthew 5:14,16

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Jesus called us the Light of the world and commanded us to LET our Light shine before men, just as the song asks us to.

This shining of Light is not a separate ministry, it is not a calling separate from the calling to be a Christian. At the point of salvation, every man receives the Spirit of God into his/her spirit. And it is that Spirit within that differentiates us from the rest of the world. It is the Spirit within that confers on us the status of Salt and Light; characteristics that are capable of saving the world from corruption and the eventual purposelessness that comes with darkness.

From the verse, we see that our shining of Light is men seeing our good works. And the only Being capable of producing anything Good is God, whose Spirit lives in us. We have everything we need to live the God kind of life before men. We just have to LET the Holy Spirit be expressed through our thoughts, words, and actions.

Sometimes we unconsciously hide our Light because we do not know what we carry, and we go on to live our lives like every other person. At other times, it’s because we’re scared of being different, or because we don’t feel good enough, or because we’re just not submitted to the Holy Spirit enough. Identify whatever blanket you may be hiding under and cast it off today. If men would glorify God because of you, they have to see your Light. There is no other way.

In closing, I no longer think the song “This Little Light of Mine” was trying to downplay the Light we have. What it was trying to imply was that, whatever level of Light I may think I have, I’m going to shine it anyway. I won’t let anything stop me.

So don’t over think things. Express the Spirit of God in you. Shine your Light.
