The Great Salvage

A few years ago, when I was much younger, there was this riot that happened in the community where I was staying. It was grim, lives were lost, properties destroyed, hopes were dashed. I remember that day, I was sitting outside the house and from afar I saw the mob advancing with swords, Cutlasses, go-to-hells (remember I said it was a few years ago)! Needless to say, it was too late to run away, for surely if they have already infiltrated the in-roads, then the main roads have been compromised. It was only a matter of time before they got to my house, and the whole thing would arrive at its logical conclusion. The house to the right of ours was burnt, well burnt. But just in the knick of time, our landlord showed up and sat guard over the house thus preventing them from compromising the house and terminating its occupants. I lived to see another day. And a few more after that day. That’s how we escaped. By the intervention of one man, whose name or face I can’t even remember.

Which brings me to this:

Hebrews 2:1-4
[1]Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
[2]For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
[3]How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
[4]God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

My emphasis is starting from verse 3, where the writer was wondering out loud how we can escape, if we neglect so great a salvation, despite all the strong proofs of it. I wonder also with him this evening!

Most people think that by believing that there is no God, then they can escape, after all, they claim, someone who doesn’t exist can not be a judge. Unfortunately for them, I suppose, this possibility doesn’t exist.

Acts 17:30-31 (NLT)

30 “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him.
31. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”

Some other people feel that they can get it done by themselves, saying that, whatever standards the Judge of all the earth is demanding, they are up to the task and can save themselves, keeping the law and all that. I am afraid, this option is also not available.

Romans 3:20 (ISV)

Therefore, God will not justify any human being by means of the actions prescribed by the Law, for through the Law comes the full knowledge of sin.

Still, some other persons have gone after other gods, other religions, and belief systems, basically thinking it’s an all-roads-same-destination kind of thing. Alas, this is also an Ill-advised choice, because:

Acts 4:12 (Amplified)

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among people by which we must be saved [for God has provided the world no alternative for salvation].”

Remember that, our current question is: how can we escape if we neglect ‘so a great salvation…?’

What is this ‘So great a salvation’?

2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (God’s word)

18. God has done all this. He has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships.
19. In other words, God was using Christ to restore his relationship with humanity. He didn’t hold people’s faults against them, and he has given us this message of restored relationships to tell others.

What did God do in order to provide the possibility of reconciling and restoring us back to Him?

Galatians 1:3-4(KJV)

[3]Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
[4]Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Just so that it can be stated without any form of ambiguity. I join Job in asking a particularly important question, in the light of all that we have been saying:

Job 25:4

How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

The answer to this question was provide without equivocation by God through the inspired Scriptures. Thus we find:

Galatians 2:16 (KJV)

[16]Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Therefore, there is now, only one thing left to do, and that is to provide the opportunity for you also to be a partaker of the already provided salvation, for truly speaking, there is no escaping the consequences of such. And yes, there will be consequences. But not for you, if only you, just as the jailer, reach out to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, believing in his redemptive work.

Acts 16:29-31 (KJV)

[29]Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
[30]And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
[31]And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Make a decision now, for behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. You don’t have today, now is the day. Make a decision to accept Him now.
