Highs and Lows

One of the reasons why I have so much affection for Hillsong’s Young and Free is because all of their songs are so relatable. And one of my personal favorites is their song “Highs and Lows”. The song has been a great source of comfort at times when I had felt so low.

However, one thing I have come to learn is that God expects growth from His children. While it is true that God is always there to welcome us whenever we return from our wayward forays, it is not God’s will that His children be locked in a never ending cycle of rising and falling.

There are many places in New Testament scripture where God expresses His desire for His children’s growth, but there is this scripture that drives in this message like a double edged sword that cuts all the way to soul and spirit.

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat” – Hebrews 5:12

God’s yearning is not just for His children to mature, but to also supply much needed ministry gifts to the Body of Christ, so that those that need to mature have all they need (Ephesians 4:16). There is a demand placed on every believer to grow into the fulness of Christ and walk in the paths of his purpose in God. This is the only way the Body of Christ can develop into what God has in mind for it.

This is not to say that growing believers are not going to make mistakes but the knowledge and application of the word of God is able to bring the saint to perfection.

It would be unseemly, if the ONLY testimony we have after years of walking with God is that “He was always there to pick me up when I fell”. God has so much in store for us to accomplish. There is always more. So much more.

By the way, I still really love the song though.. LOL.
